Dance, meet, exercise and relax!
Florida's state folk dance is the square dance. It was officially designated in 1986 as the state's official American folk dance by the Florida Legislature. The U.S. does not have a single official national dance. However, a large majority of U.S. States have adopted the square dance as their official state folk dance.
Square Dance is a dance involving four couples facing each other in the form of a "square." Sometimes there are more than four couples all dancing in more than just one square, and all dancing at the same time but independently of each other.
Floridians love to square dance, and there's a very special group of people who are fully dedicated to square dancing. Inside Arlington Presbyterian Church Hall for example, couples swing and step in time with various traditional songs, as well as popular music that has been modified to fit square dancing.
Dress Code
If you're a first-time square dancer, cowboy boots are not a requirement, and neither are gingham shirts, wrangler jeans, petticoats, or cowboy hats. Square dancing is a social dance, so just wear something comfortable.
A dance for everyone!
Square dancing has evolved into a progressive and open interaction between individuals. There are no restrictions for qualifying young, old, ethnicity, handicap, gay/lesbian, or other.
Today, Square Dancing is enjoyed by millions of dancers from all around the world.
